Minneapolis – July 2, 2004 – The National Railway Historical Society today announced the awarding

of a record $32,000 to 20 recipients of its Railway Heritage Grants Program. Established in 1991

as a Grant Program awarded to organizations that educate, publish, and preserve railroad history to

benefit future generations.

The Railway Heritage Grants Program, now in its thirteenth year, has bestowed over $253,000 to 115

organizations whose projects range from refurbishing historic railroad stations and restoring vintage

steam locomotives for operating and museum display, to the cataloging and storage of historic

railroad archives. To date, 61 NRHS Chapters and 53 organizations have received a monetary grant

from the program.

Railway Heritage Grants Director Jack Salt stated, “This is by far the best quality of grant applicants

we have received since I have been involved with the program.” Salt has been director of the program

since 1999 and, when asked about his Grant Committee of six said, “My job is made much easier by

our committee since, for the past five years, we are all working together on the same wavelength.”

The Grants Program allows NRHS members and non-members alike an opportunity to submit an

application for preservation projects on an annual basis with a maximum grant award of $5,000

per project.

Vice President and Editor of the historic National Railway Bulletin, Jeff Smith said, “ I think the

Grants Program is great! I think it exemplifies our Society’s commitment to the preservation of

railroad equipment for future generations.”

Headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the National Railway Historical Society is the nation’s

largest not-for-profit railroad historical society, consisting of over 19,000 members and 175 chapters

in the United States, Canada and Great Britain. Annually, the NRHS provides financial and logistical

support for students to further their knowledge of railroad preservation through RailCamp and

Student Photo Sessions. ###
